In a statement distributed by the White House, President Biden and first lady Dr. Jill Biden extended their congratulations to Johnson, and the president reiterated his commitment to working with him "in good faith" for the American people. Rep. Don Bacon is seated next to New York GOP members Nick LaLota and Anthony D’Esposito, as he did for the previous votes. Voting will be done verbally with members called by name alphabetically and then stating their choice for speaker. This is the first round of voting with Rep. Mike Johnson as the Republican speaker nominee.

"Therefore, the Honorable Mike Johnson of the state of Louisiana, having received a majority of the votes cast, is duly elected speaker of the House of Representatives for the 118th Congress," McHenry, the interim speaker, announced after reading the final vote tally. Johnson was the party's fourth nominee for speaker in three weeks, having taken the place of Rep. Tom Emmer, whose candidacy lasted all of four hours on Tuesday. Two other previous candidates, Reps. Steve Scalise and Jim Jordan, withdrew their names from consideration earlier in the process after failing to unite the party's various factions. Johnson, a little-known lawmaker who is now second in line for the presidency, attracted the support of all 220 Republican members in attendance, surpassing the 215-vote total that was required to win. Members of the House are now nominating representatives from their party for the speakership. Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy — who was ousted from the speakership earlier this month — voted for speaker designee Mike Johnson, resulting in applause from fellow Republican members.

As the Civil War approached, several sectional factions nominated their own candidates, often making it difficult for any candidate to attain a majority. In 1855 and again in 1859, for example, the contest for speaker lasted for two months before the House achieved a result. For example, from 1839 to 1863 there were eleven speakers, only one of whom served for more than one term. James K. Polk is the only speaker of the House who was later elected president of the United States. As the office has developed historically, however, it has taken on a clearly partisan cast, very different from the speakership of most Westminster-style legislatures, such as the speaker of the United Kingdom's House of Commons, which is meant to be scrupulously non-partisan.
Mr. Johnson voted against a stopgap spending bill put forward by former Speaker Kevin McCarthy to avert a government shutdown. Mr. Johnson is an ally and supporter of Representative Jim Jordan who considered moving forward with his own bid for speaker only after Mr. Jordan fell short. All three speaker nomination votes reflect a clear delineation among Republicans, with around half of the party backing the more conservative candidate and about half favoring the more mainstream choice. Any candidate for speaker can lose only a handful of votes and still win the speakership because Republicans hold such a small majority in the House. Rep. Mike Johnson was the leading vote getter on the first ballot, but he failed to get a majority of the present conference needed to end the voting process. Rep. Chuck Fleischmann was forced to drop out of the race because he got the fewest votes.
In exchange, when the clerk read the roll call on the 12th ballot Friday, 13 of the 20 conservative rebels switched their votes to McCarthy, handing him a surge of momentum after a grueling week of defeats. Moments earlier, McCarthy himself had walked from his seat, down the center aisle to Gaetz and Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., to try to flip their present votes to yes; that would have secured the speaker’s gavel for McCarthy. McCarthy's win came shortly after tempers boiled over and pandemonium broke out on the House floor late Friday night when McCarthy and his allies suffered defeat on the 14th straight ballot after miscalculating that they had the vote wrapped up. Jeffries on Sunday warned during an interview with "Meet the Press" that Democrats "have not identified any candidate on the other side of the aisle," they would support in a speaker vote. As chair of the powerful House Judiciary Committee, Jordan is also one of few GOP lawmakers spearheading House Republicans’ impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. Jordan is a staunch ally of former President Donald Trump and voted against certifying Biden’s victory in the 2020 election.
His successor, Dennis Hastert, had been chosen as a compromise candidate since the other Republicans in the leadership were more controversial. Hastert played a much less prominent role than other contemporary speakers, being overshadowed by House Majority Leader Tom DeLay and President George W. Bush. The House elects a new speaker by roll call vote when it first convenes after a general election for its two-year term, or when a speaker dies, resigns or is removed from the position intra-term. But this time around several Democrats have indicated they would cross the aisle to support Johnson and frustrate Greene & Co. if it came to a vote.

We dressed up for the first gala night, and had a wonderful dinner in the main dining room with new cruise friends. This easy sundress is comfortable, has pockets and can even be worn as a cover up over a bathing suit. If you do get a bit too much Caribbean sun, you’ll be happy to have non-sticky aloe vera after-sun gel that will ease a sunburn. While sold on the cruise ship, it will be more expensive than planning ahead. One item not to forget to pack for your Caribbean cruise is sunscreen. The sun is much more intense on the cruise ship, especially when at sea. A lanyard holds your cruise card both on the ship and in port, keeping your hands free.
